Ansi Warriors is designed to be easy to setup and maintain. It comes with
an Intuition-based config program that can be run from either the CLI or
WorkBench. When you start the program 'AW_cfg' you will notice the
following items to be configured:
1) The name of your BBS. Put the name of your BBS here... do not add
the word Presents, as the game will automatically add this for you.
If nothing is entered here it defaults to 'Kelly Schreiner'.
2) The path you want to send the Hall of Fame file to. This is the file
that keeps a list of all the 'tribes' that have won at Ansi Warriors.
Be sure to use a full pathname... Example:
Entering -> BULLETINS:bul11.txt would send the Hall of Fame
file to an assigned directory called 'BULLETINS:' and name the
file 'bul11.txt'.
3) Player turns per day. This item sets the maximum amount of turns a
player can have for one day. It's range is from 1-999. If you don't
enter anything here it defaults to 150... but put something in it.
4) Min Players. This item lets you set the minimum number of players
needed to start a game. It only allows numbers between 3 and 8. If
you enter a number not in the specified range it will clear the
string gadget and position the cursor back inside of it.
5) Sysop level. This item sets the minimum level that a person can have
to gain access to the games' Sysop menu.
6) Warrior cost. This is how much warriors cost the player in the game.
The default is 1 gold coin.
7) Healer cost. This is how much healers cost the player in the game.
The default is 15 gold coins.
8) ETrap cost. This is how much etraps cost the player in the game.
The default is 50 gold coins.
9) Set Game Options and Colors. Selecting this gadget will bring up a
requester that allows you to set whether you want the clouds and
ground dots turned on or off and also allows you to set the colors
for the various things in the game. Pressing each gadget will 'cycle'
the gadget through all the choices available. NOTE: If you select
'Abort' in the requester it will default to the values that were in it
before you entered the requester. Pressing 'save' will keep your new
selections for saving to the config file. NOTE: If you are using the
backgound pictures that came with the game you probably don't need to
set these values to anything different.
The defaults for this screen are:
Clouds - ON
Dots - ON
Min Players - 1
Sky color - Cyan
Ground color - Green
Power color - Red
People color - Black
Item color - Magneta
Dot color - Black
After filling in all the required setup information you then click on
the 'Config GAME Data' gadget and the main config file will be wrote to a
directory called 'DOORS:AWAR_data'. NOTE: 'DOORS:' must be an assigned
directory in your sytem before running the config program. If the
'AWAR_data' directory doe not exist in the the 'DOORS:' directory one will
be created. The next step is to press the 'Init GAME Files' gadget. This
will write all the files needed to start an Ansi Warriors game into the
'AWAR_data' directoy. As before... the 'DOORS:' directory must be an
assigned directory on your system and if the 'AWAR_data' directory does
not exist one will be created. NOTE: You can press whichever of these
buttons you want to first... just make sure you have filled in all the
above boxes first. NOTE: When you press the 'Init GAME Files' button, a
requester will appear warning you that if you proceed any games already in
progress will be deleted.
NOTE:
The following files will be written to the 'DOORS:AWAR_data' directory by
the config program.
When you select the 'Config GAME Data' button the file written is:
AW.CFG - 176 bytes
When you select the 'Init GAME Files' button the file(s) wrote are:
AW_PLAYER.dat - 2 bytes
AW_POWER.dat - 2 bytes
AW_MESSAGES.dat - 2 bytes
AW_SCOUTS_1.dat - 2 bytes
AW_SCOUTS_2.dat - 2 bytes
AW_SCOUTS_3.dat - 2 bytes
AW_SCOUTS_4.dat - 2 bytes
AW_SCOUTS_5.dat - 2 bytes
AW_SCOUTS_6.dat - 2 bytes
AW_SCOUTS_7.dat - 2 bytes
AW_SCOUTS_8.dat - 2 bytes
AW_SCOUTS_9.dat - 2 bytes
NOTE:
You MUST have ALL these files in the 'AWAR_data' directory for the game to
operate normally... except the 'AWarriors' game which can be left in your
'DOORS:' directory on some systems
NOTE:
For every game started a file called 'AW_NEWS_n.dat' will be written to the
'DOORS:AWAR_data' directory, where 'n' is the number of the game started.
NOTE:
You can exit the program at any time by clicking on the window close gadget.
You need to put the AWarriors game where you want it and add it's name to
your list of doors. Also... put the files 'AW_instr.txt', 'north.gr1',
'south.gr1', 'east.gr1', 'west.gr1', 'enemy_base.gr1', 'home_base.gr1',
'creator.gr1', and 'land_end.gr1' into the 'DOORS:AWAR_data' directory
directory and you're set to go!
NOTE:
If you want to use the exact font we used to make the game use the cleanibm
font included in the lzh file and add the following line to your
startup-sequence or wherever appropriate for your system.
add this line -> ff >NIL: cleanibm.font -0
Included with this door is a program to be run in you maintanence for the
night. This program 'reset_AWN' is used to determine how many days of Ansi
Warrior news you want to keep on hand. The program can only be run from
the CLI and takes an optional 'days' parameter. This parameter tells the
program how many days of NEWS you want to keep.
EXAMPLE:
reset_AWN 2 - This command would keep the last 2 days of news on hand
reset_AWN 7 - This command would keep the last 7 days of news on hand
NOTE:
In the game itself, the player has the option of viewing 1-the maximum
amount of days that you have set to keep. It's really flexible.
NOTE:
To use this game, 'Ansi Warriors' YOU MUST KEEP the date on your computer
accurate as it is used for various things by the program itself.
NOTE:
DO NOT EDIT any of the lines in the news file that tell what day it is.
Doing so could cause the system not to recognize the proper amount of days.
The Sysop Menu in the game is only available to those people who have a
level equal to or higher than the level you set in the config program.
Using the Sysop menu in the game you can:
1) Delete whole games... whether they are in progress or not.
2) Delete players... you cannot delete a player from a game already in
progress... You must Kill him in that game if you don't want him to
play the game anymore.
3) Kill players... you cannot kill a player unless the game he or she is
in is currently active... ie... being played. If the game is not
active you can only delete him or her from the game before it starts.
An "*" beside a users name means an active (alive) player.
A "D" beside a users name means an inactive (dead) player.
4) Set most of the games options and defaults.
NOTE:
ABOUT MULTI-PLAYER MODE:
You can set up 'Ansi Warriors' so that more than one player can play the
game at one time. With Paragon you would run ANSI Warriors from a menu
using the "FUNCTION MULTIRUNDOOR" command. When in this mode only one
player can be inside a game at one time. IE: You could have players inside
games 2, 3, 4, 7... but no two players could play inside game 5 at the
same time. 'Ansi Warriors' will write a small, (18 byte) file into ram
with 9 short integers denoting the 9 possible games. When someone enters
a game to play this file has a 1 written to the corresponding position in
the file. When you exit playing the game a zero is written over that
position thus showing it to be open. Carrier loss is also properly
updated to this file too.
NOTE:
You can edit your own background pictures but the top three lines must be the
same color as you chose for the sky in the config program and the bottom
3 lines must be the same color as you chose for the ground in the config
program. NOTE: You may not use any textures or make any intrusions into
the top 3 and bottom 3 lines of your picture. You can add whatever
animation you want to your backgrounds keeping the afore-mentioned items
in mind. The reason for this is because the program will write animation
sequences over the existing background and this is what it expects to be
there. The middle three lines can be any thing you want as they are left
alone by the program. This is to give you some creativity with the game.
NOTE:
You can make totally new pictures for the 'creator.gr1', 'enemy_base.gr1',
'home_base.gr1', and 'land_end.gr1' pictures files as these are separate
picture files and the program does no animation on them itself. If you do
make some nice backgrounds of any sort please upload them to 'The Flying
Dutchman BBS' as listed below so other people can get some enjoyment from
them. This is the main support board for the 'Ansi Warriors' game.
NOTE:
If you do make some backgrounds with an ansi editor be sure to load the
file into QED or something equivalent when you're done and take out the
first 'Escape J' sequence you find in the file. Faliure to do this will
result in the whole screen clearing when your background is displayed...
NOT VERY DESIREABLE AT ALL !!!
The coordinates for the background picture are;
x23,y2 x55,y2

The ANSI Warriors Support file area on the Flying Dutchman BBS will have the
the latest ANSI Warriors version available for general release and or beta
testing as well as other background, battle, and character pictures as they
become available. The latest release version is file requestable as AWAR.
